Usage of performance enhancing drugs in sports

When we think of performance enhancing drugs, the first thought that usually comes to mind is about being able to grow taller or build more muscles. Well, that is true as drugs can help you achieve these qualities, however, only to a certain extent. What exactly are these performance enhancing drugs? Performance enhancing drugs (PEDs) are substances used by athletes to gain a competitive edge in sports. While they offer potential benefits such as increased muscle mass or improved endurance, their use is controversial due to ethical concerns and health risks.

Athletes often resort to a variety of drugs tailored to meet the particular demands of their respective sports. While some want improvements in strength, others prioritize endurance, such as sprinters or hikers. However, usage of these drugs is deemed illegal due to their potential to induce aggression and artificially boost muscle growth, providing an unfair advantage. using them is considered cheating. While certain performance-enhancing drugs may have legitimate medical uses when prescribed by a doctor, their widespread abuse remains a prevalent issue. Consequently, athletes risk disqualification and scrutiny through doping tests aimed at detecting PEDs in their system, underscoring the importance of upholding the integrity of professional sports.

Some of the most common Performance enhancing drugs used in sports are Anabolic steroids, Human growth hormone, Erythropoietin (EPO), Beta- blockers, Stimulant, and last but not least; Diuretics.

Anabolic steroids are related to testosterones which are hormones that exist in males. they help build muscle tissue and increase body mass by acting like the body's natural male hormone. Most athletes use these drugs in competitions to increase muscle growth, strength and/or athletic performance enhancing drugs. These can be very harmful as they cause side effects such as rage and aggression,(commonly referred to as "roid rage"), acne, and fluid retention. In the long term, steroid use can lead to liver damage, cardiovascular issues and psychiatric disorders.

Some athletes use human growth hormone to lower the damage that happens to the muscles during hard workouts as HGH doping helps in getting longer muscles, more energy  and improve exercise capacity. Human growth hormones are mainly used to help children with growth if they are stunted, but now they are also used as a PED.

Stimulants are another type of very common drug used by athletes. These speed up messages travelling between the brain and body, making the user feel more awake and energetic. It is a substance that increases the nervous activity in the body. Caffeine is a great example although it is not considered as a performance enhancement drug. amphetamines are another example.

In wrapping up, it's clear that performance-enhancing drugs in sports pose a tough ethical challenge. Athletes may turn to these substances to excel, but it shakes the core values of fair play and honesty. The fact that PEDs are banned in pro sports highlights the need for integrity and openness in athletic endeavors. Looking ahead, let's nurture a culture that celebrates raw talent, dedication, and doing what's right. That way, sports can continue to inspire genuine human achievement and excellence, allowing us to push our limits further everyday.
